AAUP SC stands with faculty at Spartanburg Community College
The South Carolina state conference of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) stands with the faculty at Spartanburg Community College (SCC) as they demand the restoration of their faculty senate.
In a violation of long-held standards of faculty governance and academic freedoms, administrators at SCC disbanded the faculty senate after faculty voiced concerns over university policy changes related to in-person work requirements without faculty input. Emails organizing a faculty senate meeting to discuss faculty concerns and response were blocked by the institution.
AAUP SC represents fourteen chapters at colleges and universities across the state. The state chapter has condemned the dissolution by administrative fiat of the faculty senate at SCC through a letter to SCC president Michael Mikota (copied below) and is working with the national AAUP organization to aid their investigation into this incident. The results of this on-going investigation may place SCC on the AAUP sanctioned institutions list and result in significant damage to the college's reputation in higher education.
